A Mother Advice To Taking Care Of Yourself
I’m very honored to have a guest post written by the lovely Ameera of Habeebee homeschooling. May Allah reward her for taking time out of her busy schedule to write for us, guide and protect her Ameen.
Let’s face it, we work. As mom’s we are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all day every day! It can become taxing on us if we let everything become too overwhelming. Some days the baby is crying, toddlers are pulling at your clothes, laundry isn’t folded, and dinner isn’t ready. That’s it! You feel like screaming but screaming does not feed the children, fold the clothes, and do all the other task that we have the responsibility to do through our day.
What is the key to keeping cool? Taking care of yourself! When we are at our best, we are able to provide the best for our family. We cannot give our family the proper treatment and care needed if we are not taking care of ourselves. A woman who wants to take care of herself should remember the following:
- Pray- Prayer puts the heart at ease. The remembrance of Allah puts the heart in a tranquil state. A woman who is constantly in prayer, is constantly in ease. She knows that her Lord is As Salaam- The Peace, and turning to The One who can change the hearts of man (woman) is the main key in taking care of yourself. Finding spiritual balance helps to put everything in place. When you’re cooking, cleaning and homeschooling make dhikr. When the children are screaming ask Allah for sabr, patience. Our wealth, our time, our children are a test, so how are you doing on your life’s test?
- Exercise- A woman who wants to give her best, should be at her physical best! Even if she is not an avid exerciser, simple things such as taking walks, doing light exercises or even going to a gym can aid in feeling good about yourself mentally and physically. In the morning time I would enjoy yoga, or a intense 30 mins of working out. Not a long time but that was able to help me get energy for the morning ahead and besides that I was liking the results from the morning exercise routine. Also it gave me the strength to chase the children in the morning and have energy to play with them.
- Time Out- Time out is not just for children. Our body has rights and we need to rest. When children are napping and are having quiet time, take a break to recharge your batteries. Give your body a few minutes to prepare for the long day. It’s amazing how 10 mins of quiet and stillness can make you feel refreshed.
- Eat Right- Some foods give you a sluggish feeling and others give you energy. Eating right is good for you physically and mentally. There are also spiritual benefits, be in constant dhikr as you cook, and you put more barakah (blessings) into it. Food’s the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salaam mentioned, take note of it and put it in your daily meals. Dates are known to give natural energy, put that in a healthy breakfast in the morning to kick start your day. Honey is good for you as well, in the morning have some in a nice cup of tea and you are not only taking in important health benefits in your food but taking in Islamiclly blessed foods that our Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salaam mentioned to us in hadith.
Alhamdulilah Allah has blessed us with a family to take care of and this is an honorable trust. We want to show our appreciation and thanks to Allah for blessing us. In order to do this we must strive to take of ourselves. We play an important role in our families and we work hard, but just because we work hard, does not mean we have to be hard on ourselves.
